Facing Health Challenges
Wednesday, March 1, 2023 by Joan Munro, CPLC

Health Challenges often present themselves as an uninvited shock, chronic illness, injury, or accident. Health Challenges, can be physical, mental and/or emotional and deeply impact the person and those around him/her.  Families and individuals face a wide range of emotions to navigate and negotiate. Check out this article on having Hope during tough times. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-healing-crowd/202301/the-7-thinking-habits-of-high-hope-people-1

Scientists, researchers, journalists, and pastoral leaders know that HOPE allows people to thrive, not just survive. But a different reality arises in fears and uncertainty when diagnostic or forensic test results are not positive. Regardless of your personal circumstances, there are ways to address what you’re facing internally and externally.  *These 4 proven strategies help caregivers, too.  As a Certified Professional Life Coach, I’m offering these for your consideration:

1. Reframe your Mindset! “Mind over matter” is not just a quote. It’s scientifically proven that a positive mindset changes physical, emotional, spiritual and mental states. Get emotional and coping skills support from a counselor, therapist, social worker or friend(s) to establish and maintain a Positive or Growth Mindset. Spiritual support is crucial.

2. Seek joy in the little things and embrace gratitude in any way you can. Being joyful is more than a smile; it’s a way of thinking, feeling and experiencing life. Being outside in God’s creation or with animals often brings  a sense of calm, adding to the joy in the moment.  Joy and gratitude go hand in hand, so find gratitude in the ordinary experiences, too.

3. Ask for and build a support network to run errands, pray for you, reach out with cards, emails, calls, texts, and notes. People who are connected to others meaningfully are able to cope more effectively with whatever health challenges are present or come later.  Seek connections in your Spiritual/Pastoral community and with compassionate friends.

4. Get informed and ask lots of questions. A loved one or advocate can assist with phone calls, appointments, forms, transportation, household tasks, or meals. Hands-on help can be regular or as needed. It’s a blessing to receive and allow others to be blessed by supporting you. Don’t feel guilty or embarrassed as health challenges are when you need loving care the most.  One day, you’ll be able to “pay it forward”!
