Giving and Receiving
Thursday, June 1, 2023 by Joan Munro, CPLC

Are you a “Giver or a Receiver”?  People often identify themselves (or others) in this way, but it may not be an accurate label or viewpoint.  You might be both a “Giver and a Receiver”. It’s a matter of balance, situations, energies, attitudes, and circumstances. However, the benefits of Giving have positive effects for your well being and health! https://www.conehealth.com/services/behavioral-health/4-health-benefits-of-giving-to-others-/#:~:text=Giving%20has%20been%20proven%20to,else%2C%20or%20returned%20to%20you.

Reflect on the ways you might or have supported others with a note, text, card, email, treat, meal, visit, smile, or hug. It’s never too late to start blessing others with your sincere Giving.  As a Certified Professional Life Coach, I’m suggesting four ways to be a Giver, meaningfully.

  1. Ask the Receiver, what is it specifically that kind of support would help? Give one or two options that you can offer, if the receiver is unsure what is needed, now or later.  If nothing specific comes to mind, you might offer your email or phone number.

       2.  Share with the person struggling the way(s) you are ready/ able to support him/her. You might offer time, help with errands or chores, going to appointments, doing online research, taking notes, providing transportation, and/or companionship. Be an empathetic listener, without giving advice or asking private or personal questions.

       3. Check in with the person receiving your support.  At times, receivers don’t want to ask for any help, but may agree to assistance when the Giver checks in, without pressure. Offer options for check ins that are manageable for you and the person receiving it.  Not everyone wants to talk about their problems, but everyone needs caring support.

       4. Stay open to the ways or creative steps you might give of your “Time, Talent and Treasure”. One friend painted me a picture of my favorite beach birds. A neighbor brought dinner over, after my long day of medical appointments and treatments. A (long distance) friend sent me a Bible verse, with photos of flowers from her garden. All of these gifts blessed me, made me feel loved, cared about, and truly supported!

“Give and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together,  running over, will be put into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”   Luke 6:38

“It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” - Mother Teresa
