Last November, I had the honor of staffing at a Christian Women’s Weekend in Estes Park, Colorado. The Rocky Mountains are breath-taking, but the weekend focus was deeply personal and spiritual. Henri Nouwen, a renowned Dutch theologian, shared his thoughts on what may be a mountaintop experience (birth of a child or climbing up to the mountain summit) as well as the spiritual awarenesses, or unity of self. The Mountaintop Experience - Henri Nouwen
If you’ve had a Mountaintop Experience, can you vivdly recall that time and place? It could have been physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual, or seemed like an “out of body” experience. Sensations of awe, wonder and calm might have been present, but faded. Spiritual regeneration, awarenesses, or God-encounters may have lingered and stayed imprinted.
A Mountaintop Experience is significant, marking a time and place deeply into our brain’s memory bank. As a Certified Life Coach, I prefer to re-imagine and/or journal my experiences, with my authentic emotions. Whatever Mountaintop Experience you’ve had, I’m suggesting four ways to help anchor your experience.
First, make a record of it. Record it orally and share it out loud with someone or using your cell phone to create a video log of your experiences and sensations. Write in phrases, sentences, paragraphs in a journal or notebook or word doc.
Second, take a mental picture or an actual photo of this experience, so it can be shared in a visual manner. Paint, draw, sketch or ask a visual artist to create as you describe it all. Or seek other images that help to express your mountaintop!
Third, sing or play music or seek out music that helps to reinforce what you felt/did. Worship music or hymns help to convey depth. Instrumental Worship or “soaking” music may honor the moments of what you experienced and felt.
Fourth, design a collage or inspiration board that you visualize, that reminds you of the experience in a positive and proactive manner. Use key words, Scriptures, inspirational quotes, or just the images to remind you of the Mountain top!.
Sharing your story helps it to become more than just a “one and done” event. I’d love to hear about your mountaintop experience! Email me; [email protected]. As a Professional Certified Life Coach, I support adults as they journey through their mountains and valleys. Collaboration is essential for navigating the valleys and mountains!
